Stopping Tax Offenders and Prosecuting Identity Theft Act
I’m no fan of politics or politicians but I definitely have to applaud Democratic National Committee Chairwoman and Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz for attempting to put a stop to tax return fraud and identity theft. To be more specific Congresswoman Wasserman Schultz will introduce legislation to Washington on Monday to implement the “STOP IT Act” which stands for “Stopping Tax Offenders and Prosecuting Identity Theft Act”.
According to an article By Donna Gehrke-White, of the Sun Sentinel, With this legislation will come tougher sentences to perpetrators of identity theft and tax return fraud and would include the following:
- A minimum two-year prison sentence per tax return identity theft conviction instead of the current up-to-two-year term.
- The bill also would require the U.S. Department of Justice to focus on communities that have been hard hit by the tax identity theft, such as South Florida
Not to leave out U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Florida who has also filed legislation to toughen prison sentences of convicted identity thieves. His proposed legislation includes:
- Fines of no less than $25,000 for using another person’s Social Security or Taxpayer Identification number to file a false federal tax return.
- Requiring the Internal Revenue Service to develop a nationwide PIN system that identity-theft victims can use on tax returns (This should have been a no-brainer for the IRS)
……..Leave it to the Democrats to look out for the interest of the “less fortunate”
And No, this is not a paid ad or sponsored by anyone. It’s just a realistic observation.
